Jolly Roger Charters - Fishing Reports

May 2004

Here is a shot of the New Boat which is kept in Barnstable Harbor

New Boat The Jolly Too

The season is here finally after a long cold winter. Not only did Jolly get a new boat but he also got a new first mate. KC is her name and she is a gray and white Husky. She knows she has some big Paws to fill walking in Cassidy's footsteps although being a girl I give her a lot of slack. She talks much more than Cassidy ever did and frequently reminds me who is the boss.

Well it was a bit slow getting out of the blocks this year with a number of problems with damage to the electronics on the boat from winter storms and a storage shed fell against her. Well as of today, May 25th, the boat is back at her slip in Barnstable Harbor and we are ready to go just as the fish are arriving in big numbers.

I still have the Hewes Flats Boat and have had a few excursions already mostly working the West End of the Canal where migrations of Stripers have been seen  and by the acres. Sometimes we caught many fish, other times the fish were mysteriously gone. To this point the spectacular worm spawns of previous seasons have been non-existent around West Falmouth ponds so I have little to report to date.

     Jolly's TV appearance       with 20# fly-rod striper

The big news however, is that Jolly Roger was featured on NESN last Sunday hooking up an array of 20# Stripers on the fly rod. The crew from On The Water magazine recently developed a TV show called Fishing New England and I shot a number of hours with them last year. The show was fantastic not just because they captured the Jolly Guy with his pink Lilly shorts on fishing a secret spot for huge fish in the fall. We were even shot trying to hook up a world record so tune in this Friday, May 28th @ 5:30 PM on NESN for a repeat performance.

I'll be in touch again soon.

'Tis the season to be Jolly

JUNE

The month of May came and went without much of a  cinder worm spawn at least in the ponds I frequent. I did have a day or two of spectacular fishing with big stripers entering the pond and chowing on everything in site. A 42" fish was caught and another broke off 20# test fluorocarbon. Then they were gone. They returned for a couple more days during an extreme high tide around the Full moon in June and this was shared with a select couple buddies who capitalized on it handsomely as I returned to Ct. fro my wife's and my 30th

Jolly and high school sweetheart and wife of 30 years-a keeper

anniversary. Woww! 30 years married to my high school sweetheart. Love ya, Les.

Once again we went to the filming crew for Fishing New England, Jay Baver, and filmed some action jigging up mackerels for Captain Bob and my chunking exploits around Devil's Bridge. We managed a bunch of fish and tried live lining some but the Bay was filled with Dogfish and no big Stripers. We at least got some baits to grind up for chum and to use as strips for Fluking that will soon be here.

Seabassing was just beginning and the usual schools of bass and blues were around Cleveland Ledge although my big fish around the rocks near Old Silver were missing. It has been a mysterious year so far although word has it there are big fish around Middle ground eating up Squids.

I chartered a couple guys from the Ct. Fly Fishermen association and we did hit a worm hatch around West Falmouth Harbor. They had the best day of their life hooking schoolies all night. Barry Whitehouse and his buddy Arnold enjoyed the heck out of the fishing and have a few good stories to bring back to their buddies in Ct.

I also fished Brewster Flats and Barnstable where hordes of small bass were feeding on small, small sandeels about an inch long. The bigger fish could not be gotten as the small guys grabbed everything that was in front of them. We at least saw some nice fish but that was all. The new boat is running well and had her first taste of skinny waters.

I absolutely love fishing skinny water and have had a number of charters fishing the flats of CC Bay. I am preparing for the next TV shoot with On The Water guys sight casting with emphasis on fly fishing. The plan is to film with one of the finest fly fisherman in the northeast Lou Tabory so I am spending as much time as possible looking for fish as well as some biggies.

I took Paul Blinko and his 2 grandsons form Georgia out and even though the early bite was slow, we were rewarded by a bunch of blues and schoolies bustin' all over the surface just off Chappin Beach. Most of the catching was with plastic baits and Paul landed his first stripers with the fly rod. Good fun and lots of fish.

Later in the tide, about 3 hours into incoming, a host of bigger fish moved onto the flats. As usual, I will stay fishing myself or call a buddy. This time I was solo and was into some really nice fly rod bass up to 32". The next day I arranged to fish the skinny water with Curt Jessup from The Sporting Life. We fished out of the Flats boat and once again were into t some really nice fish with Curt landing the prize-a 35" 14-15#er on a sinking line and big deceiver pattern.

The bottom fishing bite with Captain Bob and Lemke-Ann Charters did another filming fishing for Seabass off Wing's Neck in Buzzards Bay. We had a few of the OTW staff out and hooked up many nice with with Tony Gola taking the big fish honors. That show aired June 19 on NESN and again received great reviews. The number of people watching the show has Increased dramatically sine it's beginning . Great job Jay Baver and crew!

I continue to jump on Bob's boat when he needs a hand if I am not chartering and this last week in June all hell broke loose from seabass to fluke trips we had a s host of successful charters and even a couple trips with friends and family taking some wonderful tasting fish for the table. Bob and I are working on a cookbook of fish recipes so if any of you viewers want to email your favorite, it may be part of the book.Jolly Roger Charters is my website or email to JlRogChrt@aol.com.

One of the trips we did recently was for an Orthopedist from Boston Bill Mitchell, his wife Lori and daughter Haley. Although Bob had a little boat trouble at first we salvaged the day with a host of good eating Sea Bass and Scup and a few Fluke. They went home with a cooler full of fish. I personally had a god time chatting with some really wonderful people. That's what this business is all about at least for me and I know Bob feels the same.

That's no Fluke! Ricky Morra's 34"  striper on a Fluke rig

Bob and  I took out some buddies Flukin' and ended up with some great  eating fish as well as a couple Stripers who ate our Fluke rigs. This 34"took Ric's bait and him for a Nantucket sleigh ride.

JULY

Curt Jessup and I got some on the water casting and catching pointers from fly fishing guru Lou Tabory the other day while fishing around the Elisabeth Islands. Watching Lou cast and his retrieves as well as his choice of flies for the conditions we fished was a great learning experience for both of us. In a couple hours Lou landed a handful of fish with a couple in the mid-20" range. Not bad for simply running out on short notice and casting for a couple hours.
