Jolly Roger Charters - Fishing Reports

2007 SEASON

As the last few seasons began, I fished the Farmington River in CT with flyfishing guide and longtime buddy Fred Jeans of The Selective Angler. The water level was high due to all the rains we had the end of April but we got a call from another friend and guide Rob Nicholas of The Housatonic Anglers who informed us that the recent water releases from the Dam had been held back and that the levels were perfect for wading and that he and his sport caught a boatload of trout on Streamers. That's all we needed to hear especially since I have Tuesdays off from my PT job. We met at around 2 PM and immediately were into fish-browns, rainbows and brookies from 12"-16". We began to see Hendricksens hatching all over the place although no risers noted. We thought that maybe in slower water where the temps could be more conducive to rising fish there might be some surface activity so we moves ahead to another spot. Sure enough the Mayflies were all over and there was surface activity even thought we knew that the hatch would soon be over if history repeats itself. We quickly got in position and within 5 minutes I had 3 hits on top but came up empty. I then looked up at Fred who was banging fish left and right. Of course with tail between my legs I asked him what he was using since he is the master of this stream. He told me that the fish were taking emergers as he slowly released a beautiful 16" rainbow. I swallowed my pride and met him on the shore and he set me up with a CDC Hendricksen emerger.informed me that he had to leave and gave me his fishing spot. After missing a couple short strikes I quickly got the knack and caught and released 8 fish within 1/2 hour with the last a 21" rainbow that tore the pool apart

Great start to 2007. Thanks Fred
